Aha, I got it - called cable TV but they weren't much help as he kept telling me I needed a 5-jack cord. I kept telling him I *had* an HD picture so his guys installed it. He finally agreed I didn't need the patch cord but what I had to do was change the source/input for the TV.

Once I put it on HDMI2 (instead of 1) it played the DVD, I just got off and then put it back

I tried but I didn't hook it up right. I'm taking a break from it right now.

I hooked up the HDMI cable from the DVD player to the TV. I hooked the patch cords (yellow, white and red) from the DVD player to ..... what? Does it go to the cable box, or the TV? Without those hooked up, when I click play, nothing comes on the screen

Yep, upconverting -- I had to ask what it meant, had never heard of it.

I bought <a href="http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/Search.do?c=1&searchType=user&keyword=toshiba+sd-5000&searchSection=All&go.x=0&go.y=0" rel="nofollow"> this</a> model as he recommended it to me

You don't need a $55 cable.
My HDMI cost me under 10 bucks and don't notice the difference to a 50 bucks one.
